Pent and apex sheds are two of the most popular garden shed styles, and both can provide excellent storage. The main difference is the roof shape, but that difference affects appearance, headroom, positioning and how the building works in your garden.

What is an apex shed?

An apex shed has two roof slopes that meet at a ridge, creating the traditional triangular roof shape most people associate with a garden shed.

This style generally gives more height through the centre of the building and works particularly well for larger sheds, workshops and traditional garden layouts.

See our current apex shed range.

What is a pent shed?

A pent shed has a single sloping roof, usually higher at the front and lower at the rear. Its simpler roof line gives it a neat, modern appearance and can make it easier to position alongside a fence, wall or boundary.

Pent vs apex shed: the main differences

Headroom

An apex roof normally provides its greatest height along the centre ridge. That can be useful if you are tall, want overhead space or plan to use the building as a workshop.

A pent roof has its highest point along one side of the building, so the internal height feels different. Depending on the layout, this can work very well for shelving and storage.

Position in the garden

Pent sheds are often chosen for locations beside fences, walls or at the side of a house because the single roof slope gives a clean profile.

Apex sheds tend to look more balanced when they are visible from several sides or positioned as a more prominent feature in the garden.

Door and window layout

Both styles can be available with different door and window positions. Think about the direction you will approach the shed from, where shelving will sit and where you want natural light.

Our main garden sheds collection includes left-door, right-door, centre-door, double-door and no-window configurations across different models.

Appearance

An apex shed has a traditional garden-building look. A pent shed usually has a simpler, more contemporary shape. There is no universally better option; it largely comes down to the space and style of your garden.

Which is better for storage?

For most customers, the size and door configuration matter more than the roof shape. A well-planned pent shed can provide just as much useful storage as an equivalent apex shed.

If you need to store larger equipment, bikes or machinery, pay particular attention to the door width and internal floor area rather than choosing purely on appearance.

Which is better for a workshop?

If you intend to spend time working inside the shed, consider headroom, natural light, workbench position and the size of the building. Apex sheds can feel spacious through the centre, while a pent shed can work particularly well with a bench or shelving positioned along the taller side.
